I see two programs, Works with SmartThings and SmartThings-compatible. Which should I use?

Our Works with SmartThings program now has two options for you to consider:

  • SmartThings-certified: Your product will go through functional certification testing by the SmartThings team to assure consumers that it works within the SmartThings ecosystem. When you receive this certification, your device will be shown as a Works with SmartThings certified device in the SmartThings app. You can also use the “Works with SmartThings” logo on the product package, website, and other marketing materials. Works with SmartThings certification is the more comprehensive option with marketing advantages. The certification can take up to 30 days for approval.

  • SmartThings-compatible: A new option if your product is available and you’re looking for a fast way to get it listed in the SmartThings app. You will be responsible for following our self-testing guidelines to make sure your product is compatible with SmartThings. You can register for the SmartThings-compatible listing and your request will be reviewed within 2 business days.



Can I use the Works with SmartThings logo if I have a SmartThings-compatible device?

No. The “Works with SmartThings” certification logo is reserved for devices that have been certified to work well within the SmartThings ecosystem. You will be able to list your product as “compatible”.



How long will it take me to get my product reviewed and approved for the SmartThings-compatible program?

When you have completed your development and testing and are ready for your product to be listed in the SmartThings app, you can submit your product for review and you will hear back within 2 business days. Once approved, your device will be shown in the SmartThings app as a SmartThings-compatible device.



What types of devices can be approved in the SmartThings-compatible program?

Currently, the SmartThings-compatible option will allow you to submit cloud-to-cloud devices. Support for other types of devices will be coming in the future.



What is a cloud-to-cloud device?

Cloud-to-cloud devices are devices that have their own cloud service, and have a “Cloud Connector” that allows that device to be accessed from the SmartThings app through SmartThings Cloud.



What do I have to do to create a Cloud Connector for my device to be compatible with SmartThings?

If you have IoT devices which are connected to a cloud, you can integrate your device to our ecosystem with a SmartThings Cloud Connector. You can start building your SmartThings Cloud Connector using Developer Workspace.



Is there a cost for the SmartThings-compatible program?

No. Submitting a device for the SmartThings-compatible program is free of charge.



Yes. If you want the benefits of the Works with SmartThings certification and logo, you can apply for that program. If your device passes the Works with SmartThings certification then it will be listed that way in the SmartThings app.



Do I need to have a SmartThings Hub or router to do SmartThings-compatible testing?

If your cloud-to-cloud devices communicate via LAN/WAN, then you do not need a SmartThings Hub. Otherwise, you will need a SmartThings Hub.



No. The SmartThings-compatible option is meant to be a self-test approach. SmartThings will provide you with a set of testing guidelines that you should follow. SmartThings will review the Connector information you submit and if OK, publish in the SmartThings app.



Can users of the SmartThings app see my device in any country?

Currently, when you have your device published using the SmartThings-compatible option, it will be available to all users in all countries.



Once my device has passed SmartThings-compatible validation, can I change my Connector’s logo/icon image that displays in the SmartThings app?

Currently, you cannot change the icon for the originally submitted one.



How do I remove my device from the SmartThings app if I want to deprecate it?

Currently there is no way to remove your published device from the SmartThings app using Developer Workspace. Please submit a support ticket requesting the removal and SmartThings will have it removed from the SmartThings app.
