How to Test

Developer Workspace enables you to test Automations and devices with the SmartThings app.

Deploy to Test

In order to register your Automation for self-publishing and install from menus in Developer Mode, you will need to explicitly deploy from Developer Workspace.

In the Developer Workspace Overview section, click Deploy to Test to list your automation in the SmartThings app. Follow the below instructions for how to test a specific connected service.

Test your Automation

After creating your Automation, registering and deploying to test in Developer Workspace, you will need to deploy the Automation to test.

In the Test menu, click Live Logging to access a live capture of events from your Automation. Use live logging as a companion tool to learn more about the behaviors of your Automation and to help troubleshoot issues, using the error messages included in generated events.

To test with the SmartThings app:

  1. Launch the SmartThings app. Your SmartThings app and Developer Workspace must be signed into the same account.
  2. Enable Developer Mode in the SmartThings app.
  3. Go to the SmartApps tab and click ADD SMARTAPP.
  4. Under Custom, tap on the Automation app to install it.
  5. Test your Automation.

Test your device

After creating your Device, registering, and deploying to test in Developer Workspace, the Device information is sent to the SmartThings Cloud.

To test with the SmartThings app:

  1. Launch the SmartThings app. Your SmartThings app and Developer Workspace must be signed into the same account.
  2. Enable Developer Mode in the SmartThings app.
  3. Go to Devices tab and click ADD DEVICE.
  4. Go to ADD DEVICE MANUALLY and click My Testing Devices. You can now see and add your self-published devices.
  5. Confirm the connection by selecting ALLOW on your device.
  6. Test your device.

Note the following:

  • To publish a SmartThings-certified device, you must download and complete a self-assessment checklist when requesting to publish the device.
